Azeroth Is Rolling Initiative: The WoW x D&D Expansion Drops Nov 17

So it's official. After years of your table's resident WoW veteran saying "this is just like that one raid boss," Wizards of the Coast has decided to stop fighting it. On November 17, World of Warcraft gets an official Dungeons & Dragons expansion as part of D&D's Season of Champions — bringing Azeroth's species, locations, bosses, and player builds straight to your tabletop.

Here's what's in the box: nine new and updated subclasses, seven WoW dungeons to crawl through, and more than 60 new spells. Sixty. Because what every D&D table desperately needed was the wizard's turn taking even longer. (Love you, wizards. Please stop casting.)

The subclasses are the real headline, though. Your friend who has played a paladin in every campaign since 2016 can now do it with lore reasons for yelling "For the Alliance!" at the dinner table. That's called growth.

The part the internet is actually fighting about: this kicks off D&D's "Universes Beyond" era — the same crossover playbook Magic: The Gathering has been running to extremely mixed reviews. Wizards has already teased Star Wars down the line, which means we're one announcement away from a Jedi multiclassing into warlock and nobody can stop it. Is nothing sacred? No. Is it going to be fun anyway? Obviously.

And let's address the real victim here: your dice collection. Or rather, your wallet. Every new subclass is just a socially acceptable excuse to buy a new set. Death knight? Black and red, obviously. Druid? Greens and golds. This expansion isn't content, it's a shopping list with stat blocks. (You're welcome.)

A few predictions for your first session, free of charge:

  • Someone will quote Barrens chat within the first hour. It is inevitable. Make peace with it.
  • There will be at least one Leeroy Jenkins moment. It is now rules-legal.
  • Your DM has waited their entire life for permission to run a 40-person raid encounter. Pray for your party.

November 17. Clear your schedule, upgrade your dice tray, and maybe warn your DM. Azeroth is coming to the table — and it's bringing friends.
